Release: September 2009

Dr. Hall is a psychiatrist at Riverside Counseling Center.

Synopsis:

Over the past ten years, scientists have discovered remarkable secrets about the design of the human brain. A discussion of the chemical imbalances that underlie depression takes the reader deep into an understanding of brain cell dysfunction. The author creates a “Cascade Model” to explain the roles of stress, hormone release, and brain cell injury in depression.

Stressful childhood experiences and unhealthy spiritual beliefs also increase the risk of depression. Childhood events shape our self-esteem and create unhealthy expectations that can lead to depression. Spiritual personality, the way we view ourselves in relationship to God, may distort our beliefs and also lead to black moods.

The final section of the book describes a SMART step process of recovery which highlights the importance of brain cell regeneration, emotional growth, and renewed spiritual vitality. Some will find healing through spirituality; others through psychological or medical help. The SMART step model leads the reader through a practical approach to considering these treatments. A message of triumph underlies each chapter and sparks hope for renewal.

Endorsements:

Paul Meier, MD. Author of over 80 books and founder of Meier Clinics: “I am so thrilled that Don Hall has written Breaking Through Depression. He not only explains the many factors that can rob us of our joy in life, including stressors, genetic factors and even faulty religious concepts, but goes on to also share with us a series of positive steps we can use to walk out of the darkness of depression to the light of joy, grace, and love. I highly recommend this book.”

William J. Maier, PsyD. His ‘Chemical Cascade’ metaphor enlightens the reader to a medical viewpoint of depression. His ‘SMART’ model for recovery communicates an easily understandable pathway to healing. Most important of all, he provides biblical guidance for understanding what is commonly misperceived as a failure of faith. It is a book full of hope for anyone who suffers from depression!"

Dan G. Blazer, MD, PhD. Professor of Psychiatry, Duke University: "Don Hall has written an important and unique book… His SMART steps formula is elegantly simple, providing mileposts along the path to recovery."
