Holistic Mental Health Services

Treating the whole person

All Riverside providers encourage regular exercise, good sleep habits, and a healthy diet. The brain simply works better with good rest and nutrients. Our medical staff places specific emphasis on the importance of your physical health.

Our psychiatrists and nurse practitioner will evaluate for the presence of physical illness (e.g., thyroid disorder) related to emotional and thinking problems.
We encourage you to seek an initial evaluation and routine follow-up with your general practice physician to rule out medical causes of mental illness. Although non-brain illnesses are less common causes of emotional illness, we encourage you to get full physical and laboratory examination as part of a complete mental health work-up. Our medical providers are available to evaluate a possible need for psychiatric medication.

They will discuss the risks and benefits of treating or not treating chemical imbalances which underlie some mental struggles.
Our counselors are available to teach you relaxation techniques that will help you to rest your body and mind. Lowering stress through meditation and other forms of deep relaxation will help to reduce the damaging effects of stress to your brain.

Psychiatric Medication

Depression, anxiety, and other emotional struggles may be related to a problem in the brain. Chemical imbalances in brain cells (e.g. Low serotonin function) may result in impairments of ability to work or sustain healthy relationships.
While psychotherapy may help to restore brain cell function in mild depression and anxiety, medication management should be considered when significant impairment of school, work, or relationships develops.

Psychiatric medication may be needed to restore healthy sleep patterns, concentration abilities, or healthy mood balance. Your psychiatrist or nurse practitioner can help you to weigh the risks and benefits of medication, and help you to determine if medication is necessary.
In most cases, counseling is helpful. In most cases, medication is helpful. The two usually work better together. Therefore, if psychotherapy is not leading to significant relief of emotional impairment, your counselor may recommend that you consider an evaluation for psychiatric medication.

Spirit

Faith-Based Counsel

Many people place great value on their spiritual perspective and seek to include discussion of spirituality as part of their counseling process. Riverside offers the option to discuss spirituality, from a Christian world view, as part of this process.

When requested, some of our therapists integrate discussions of a client’s spiritual walk and traditional forms of psychotherapy. When scheduling your first appointment, our receptionists will be pleased to discuss which provides offer this form of counseling. For those who do not wish to discuss issues of faith, counselors will focus on psychotherapy or medical approaches to emotional issues.
